Rajkummar Rao, this name is treated as competition to top actors like Ranbir Kapoor, Ranvir Singh and Shahid Kapoor. And why not? He earned his credibility as an actor long ago and has marveled us in all kinds of roles. His boy next door looks make his roles relatable to common audience. Although his debut was not noticed in Rann, he was recognized for his second film, with Ekta Kapoor, Love Sex Aur Dhoka. And then there was no looking back.

His choice of roles is thoughtful, meaningful and definitely not commercial. The movies he did, in combination with his acting skills, bring a fresh vibe in the industry. He are 5 times Rajkummar Rao restored faith in Bollywood.

Kai Po Che

Most people would disregard the movie as just another Chetan Bhagat novel remake, but the actors brought life to the characters in the story. Rao plays Govind, who is a small town boy and a numbers geek, who falls in love with a simple girl. This movie brought him all the limelight and gave him the boy next door image. He proved that it is not screen time, but the screen presence which is important.

Shahid

Based on the Bombay riots and Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act, the movie is a biopic of human rights activist Shahid Azmi, who was assassinated in 2010. The role of an independent lawyer, who ends up in jail under false charges was convincingly played by Rajkummar Rao. The movie does not encourage any commercial elements and is portrayed as it is. Shahid was the first movie, where Rao played the protagonist and this was critically acclaimed. This movie won him a National Award and Best Actor under the critics category.

City Lights

This 2014 movie is another great film in his career. His action as a farmer, who is betrayed by the politics of city life, is commendable. Although the movie was not a success in numbers language, the story line with a tragic end gives hope for realistic movies from Bollywood. And Rao with his skills, obviously made a mark.

Trapped

The most anticipated movie in 2017, this movie was a critical hit. Rao is the only actor in the movie and plays the role of  a 25 yr old, who is trapped inside an empty flat, with no access to basic needs. Two hours of the whole psychological journey, portrayed by Rao is extra ordinary. He makes every scene believable with his common man reactions and timing. Again this earned him an award for Best Actor.

Newton

With all the previous success, this movie was also long waited for in 2017. Rao plays the role of a government clerk on election duty posted at a Naxal controlled town. The movie has a dark comedy to the story with a strong message at the end. Rao’s timing, innocent action for the interesting story line is what is expected from a good cinema. The film won awards for Best Story, Best Actor, Best Director and many more across various platforms.

Rajkummar Rao is an example of a success story of a common man from nothing to everything. Here’s hoping that this talent doesn’t fade anytime soon and continues to flourish.
