Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

Blessed are the forgetful, for they get the better even of their blunders.

There is never a bad time to watch a romantic film. Especially one, which has science fiction involved. And it was a loss, that I did not watch this film all these days. Most of you might already know this magical movie, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind.

The movie begins with Joel, a sensitive shy guy and Clementine, a free spirited girl, meet on a freezing afternoon in Montauk. Both of them feel a connection with each other although they meet for the first time and end up spending the whole day together, falling in love. 

Cut to after the titles, we see a depressed Joel, who is struggling hard to figure how Clem could forget all about him and act like a total stranger. He comes to know of this NYC firm called Lacuna, Inc., whose service is to erase unwanted memories of clients. Fed up of dealing with the tragedy, he, like Clementine, enrolls himself to go through the procedure. The memory erasing team arrives that night and puts him to sleep to begin the process.

The spotless mind then takes a turn. Joel, in his head, starts to reverse engineer his memories to the first time they meet. Upon visiting, each memory is erased permanently. Halfway through the process, he realizes he doesn’t want to continue with this for the fear of completely losing his memory of Clementine, but is unable to communicate this to the team performing it. He tries to find loopholes in his recollections, where the team cannot reach to erase.

Meanwhile, Mary, the receptionist at Lacuna, is dating Mark, the memory erasing technician, but has feelings for Dr. Howard, head of the firm. That night, she discovers that he previously had an affair with Howard and that he had erased it to keep things normal at work. She is outraged, quits her job and avenges her tragedy, by mailing all the firm’s records to respective patients. 

Cut to the present day, Joel and Clem, after their wonderful time at Montauk, come back home to their records and are in utter shock. What happens next is for you to watch and find out.

The screenplay, the narration, the dialogues and the action – I can’t say enough about this. Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet and Kristen Dunst, the names say it all. Obviously, with Charlie Khaufman on story and screenplay, the film won many accolades, including Movie of the Year and Best Sci-Fi Film. Overall, it has all the intriguing elements, that will glue you to the seat and make you watch it without a blink.
