Frances Ha

You know, how you see these, ‘my whole life was a lie’ memes and relate to them instantly? This week, if you read this and watch the movie, you will be doing that a lot more times, than you usually do. Frances Ha is one such movie, which will force you to go through reality checks and measure pretense against truth. This pick, not only urges you to contemplate your current positioning of life in general, but also gives you a set back of which mistakes you made when, could lead or have led to what you are now or will be henceforth. Let’s talk about Frances Halladay.

The film was written, directed and produced by Noah Baumbach with Greta Gerwig as the co-writer and the lead actor. Gerwig plays the role of Frances, who is just another girl from Sacramento, California, living in Brooklyn, New York. Funny, quirky and sensitive, but also tough and independent, all at the same time, Frances Ha is an average 20 something woman, with issues to deal with.

She hopes to renew the lease to her apartment and continue living with her best friend – Sophie (played by Mickey Sumner) and she finds out that Sophie has already made plans of moving on. She aspires to become a professional dancer, only to realize that she has been temporarily fired from her apprentice dancer job. She tries to make friends with her new roomies, Lev and Benji, and notices that unexpressed rich boys – poor girl gap between them. Frances is broke as hell in the big city and collects whatever she can from the little that is left and leaves to meet her parents in the West coast. Christmas floats by merrily, and she is brought back to reality when she comes back to NY.

With barely any money to spend, no place to crash and no friends to take care, she sets out on her own, trying to gel with random people momentarily. When she hears that Sophie is moving to Tokya with her fiance, she decides impromptu that a trip to Paris would bring a change to her dull, lonely life. In spite of gathering all the money and leaving to Paris, she ends up spending most of the time sleeping at the room, thanks to the jet lag.

With her best friend gone, Paris gone horribly wrong and absolute no money, she decides to be a pouring lady and earn a few bucks. While on her waitress duty, she meets Sophie accidentally and ends up having a good time with her. Nevertheless, the next morning, she is faced with the harsh reality again when Sophie abandons her in the middle of nowhere.

That is when she has an awakening moment and reconciles to get her haphazard life together. The climax is for you guys to watch. As you watch Frances make blunders in her life with bold eyes and a smile stuck to her face, it reminds you of the bad phase, that you went through where everything you did, just multiplied into more chaos and turned your day upside down.

Greta Gerwig, has always been one of my favorites actors, all time. Her ease of action, excellent spontaneity in expressions and the girl-next-door attitude that she carries in this film, is truly relatable. She makes it seem like whatever happened could happen to anyone of us, anytime. After all, that is the essence of the movie. Frances Ha has acclaimed many critical appreciations for the screenplay and narration. Also, the whole movie is in monochrome, which just adds a certain depth to the scenes.

This is a must watch by the true meaning not just for women or girls, but for everyone. Check out the trailer below and decide for yourself. If you have already watched it, let’s talk all about it in the comments section. If you like what you read, give it a thumbs-up and check out other must watch movies as well. Happy Watching!!
