Feminism is the buzz word today. With #metoo movements happening at rapid and feminists struggling for gender equality, every female voice is an inspiration and every opinion has an impact. Talking about female inspiration, who better to cite, than the girl boss herself – Meryl Streep.

We millennials know her and look up to her for her badass roles in movies like The Devil Wears Prada, The Post, Mamma Mia and many more. But even before those, Meryl Streep had an era of acting in successful women-oriented films, before we were even born or were too little to know her stardom. This week, I talk about her hidden gems, that all millennials must watch.

I can’t talk enough about this movie. Undoubtedly, the best movie, I have ever watched till date. Streep playes the role of Julia Child, the chef mother for one and all. The film is a contrast comparison between Julie Powell, an aspiring blogger from New York and Julia Child from her early years as a beginner chef. Julie finds inspiration from Julia and fixates on a resolution guided by Julia’s cookbook. 

Sophie’s Choice

Sophie is a Holocaust survivor, living in Brooklyn with her schizophrenic lover. A novelist befriends her and unravels her horrifying past of her life at the concentration camps and the miserable choice that she had to make, in choosing either one of her children to live and the other to die. The story is an emotional ride, with a tragic climax and won Meryl Streep her first Academy Award as a Best Actress.

The Iron Lady

Streep plays the role of Margaret Thatcher, the first woman Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The movie shows the early life of Thatcher, her struggles with education as a middle class girl, her adaption to politics and her uncompromising leadership style, which brought her the nickname of ‘The Iron Lady’. This movie also bagged Meryl Streep another Academy Award for the Best Actress.

One True Thing

Ellen, who deeply admires her father, comes home for the holidays to discover that her mother, Kate, played by Meryl Streep, is diagnosed of cancer. The movie portrays the beautiful bond between a mother and her daughter, where Ellen discovers dirty secrets about her father and realizes that her mother, who she had no respect for all these years, in fact had a difficult life. The movie ends on a suspenseful climax of whether or not, Ellen assisted Kate in her suicide to put an end to her misery.

Charlie is hired to write the screenplay for the film adaptation of The Orchid Thief, by Susan Orlean (played by Meryl Streep). After terribly failing to meet deadlines, he meets Susan in person to negotiate the timelines. He discovers that Susan’s lover is the real orchid thief and that he grows the rare ghost orchid to produce a psychotic drug, in turn addicting Susan to the drug. This 2002 film is a comic drama, with elements of suspense with an intense climax, making it a must watch for Meryl Streep’s deadly performance.

Meryl Streep, being the star that she is, it is unfair and impossible to limit her performance to 5 favorite films. She is a legendary actress and a versatile one at it. However, those were my top 5 favorite hidden movies of Meryl Streep that I feel all millennials must watch. Happy Watching!!
